Dear Quallyna Porte:
Greetings and very best wishes of God’s constant blessings.
Thank you so very much for your email of 08 September 2011, introducing yourself and the other elected officers of your association in the U.S. I am also delighted that shortly after I told you about the deplorable condition of the STC elementary building and the need to urgently renovate the roof and ceiling, you immediately expressed the interest of you and other alumni to help out. The Archdiocese of Monrovia is certainly grateful to all who commit themselves to helping with the education of our younger sisters and brothers in Liberia.
Two days after our telephone conversation, while I was trying to finalize a cost estimate for the renovation in order to send it to you as I had promised, some others of your fellow alumni who are involved with the Capital Campaign Fund (CCF) for STC and the rebuilding of SPHS also contacted me expressing concern about the deplorable condition of the STC and their desire to help out.
Unfortunately, however, I thereafter, upon speaking with my predecessor and some of your fellow alumni in Liberia, sensed some kind of disunity among you all in the U.S. I hastily, therefore, humbly plead that everyone seeks to foremost be united as one since all of us have one common interest, which is helping to educate our younger sisters and brothers. Let everyone now make a conscious effort to eliminate the internal discord and rancor that exist within your association. Surely, this is not even good for the hearing of the children who are to be educated at St. Teresa and St. Patrick. As you and your corps of officers have been in office for almost four months now and I supposed there has been no objection or negativity from anyone, this is a positive sign. Try to bring all the heads and hands together in the alumni association.
Archbishop Zeigler is strongly suggesting that you and your fellow officers make UNITY AND RECONCILIATION your primary priorities for the greater good of all alumni in the U.S. and the two schools here in Liberia. The sooner this bridge of unity and reconciliation can be jointly built by everyone, the easier, faster and better everyone will be successful in helping the children.
It is without doubt that your association is still divided. This division is reflected in the discussions that I have had with several of you already regarding the STC renovation. How many groups will spring up to rebuild your schools ... with each group trying to compete with and out do the other? Nothing gets done when people will not meet each other half way and even compromise.
The Archbishop and the Archdiocese gave support to the Capital Campaign Fund (CCF) and the Society of African Missions (SMA). CCF is set up as a tax-exempt entity but with an operating account on the books of the SMA. The SMA, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Monrovia, follows all the accounting standards and procedures to account for all receipts and uses of all funds received from other partners who help with the implementation of Archdiocesan pastoral activities. This process has received widespread commendation from the partners. So the Archbishop recommends that funds gathered to help STC and SPHS be channeled through the SMA. I, therefore, plead that any assistance for STC and SPHS be sent to the Archdiocese through the SMA.
The Archdiocese of Monrovia eagerly looks forward to hearing one tone of voice from the alumni of STC and SPHS in the U.S. Let us all remember that it is never too late for PEACE. It is never too late to extend the hand of friendship to a fellow former schoolmate. This I strongly recommend as each one makes a firm renewed commitment to helping educate our younger sisters and brothers. One great project everyone could have in mind for next year’s convention, I propose, could be the conduct of a Reconciliation Retreat for all STC/SPHS Alumni in the USA. At such retreat religious experts could be called in to facilitate the implementation of the project. With God always on our side, I am quite confident there will be a big achievement in bringing everyone together truly as former schoolmates.
May God richly bless all of you alumni of STC and SPHS as you unite to make impact on the education of Liberian children.
Very kind personal regards.
Yours, Varfee.
